Mauga Mu Wins at the 2018 Toa Afi Orlando Competition

After the success at the 2018 World Fire Knife Championship at the Polynesian Cultural Center, the Mauga Mu team decided to go to the far side of the United States to participate in the 2018 Toa Afi Orlando Fire Knife Competition located in Orlando, FL. The Samoan Fire Knife Culture on the East Coast has been known to be a craft of an exclusive group of people, but its popularity has been growing steadily as the new generation shows their interest in the cultural craft.

Our competitive team this year consisted of a tight crew: Nati Oloa, Isaako Milford, and Toa Milford who are returning to this competition for a second year; and also jumping in for their Orlando Competitive debut are brothers Kekai and Makoa Nielsen, Toa and La’i Tevaga as well as Joe Milford, the 3rd brother of the Milford brothers.

We had so much fun in Orlando and the young men and women truly did a wonderful job! It was such a great event full of Aloha!

Labor Day Field Trip

It’s been a while since we were able to take a day to just enjoy the day with the student’s and family of Kalena’s and Mauga Mu. Although not everyone was able to make it today, we want to send a “Thank You” to all who were able to make it. Thank you for taking time to spend with us and each other… and for those who weren’t able to come, you were all with us in spirit!

Our trip consisted of an amazing, gut-busting, fun-filled day with Chief Sielu’s group that tour at the Tropical Farm’s Macadamia Nut Farm followed by lunch at Kalena’s Hut.

Mauga Mu Does it Again at the World Championship!

The 25th Annual World Fire Knife Championship is now over and what a weekend it was! Mauga Mu truly made a presence this year and not only were we successful as competitors, but our vendor booth was also a popular pick with new school gear, accessories, dresses and athletic wear by

Our school swept the Junior division yet again with Matagi taking first, his younger brother Mose taking second and Isa’ako taking third. Hunter Nery’s strong, warrior presence and persistent charismatic performance allows him, yet again, to walk away in top three of the intermediate division and places 3rd. Mikaele’s heartfelt, groundbreaking performance took second place this year with just a one point difference behind the first place winner as claimed by the awards committee. We are so proud of everyone who participated. The level of talent that steps on that stage is always impressive!

Bravo warriors! Bravo!
